Vintage off-white/yellow/green hand-painted tea caddy lamp bases with gold, brown, red and green accents. These gorgeous lamp bases feature two birds playing in a shrub/garden scene, one having landed on a branch.
Tea caddies and canisters, used in China for centuries, were introduced to England in the mid-17th century. Like the tea leaves they contained, these items quickly became a popular luxury item, crafted in a range of Chinoiserie styles. In the present pair, two tea canisters have been transformed into the bases of table lamps. Retaining their original painted decoration, they represent a charming relic of the English fervour for tea.
These lamp bases would look perfect in a bedroom, or in a living room or office. They are a great size and are beautifully painted. Perfect condition. The two lamps vary a little in the detail of the birds and flowers as they are hand-painted. See images for detail. Please note: Lamp shade is not included. These lamps take Edison screw bulbs.
